Tippet Rise is delighted to welcome back Grammy-winning cellist Arlen Hlusko for the inaugural performance at the Geode, a new open-air performance space set in a panorama of seven surrounding mountain ranges.
Hlusko, hailed for her “absorbing originality” (Gramophone), will perform a series of dynamic and wide-ranging works presented in sets, ranging from classic Bach cello suites to new works, including two world premieres. The first is a work by Paul V. Cortez, who is currently incarcerated at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, which he wrote as part of his participation in Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program. Then, in celebration of the opening of the Geode, Arlen will perform a Tippet Rise commission and world premiere of Àkweks Katyes (The Eagle Flies) by Grammy-nominated world music artist Dawn Avery.
Designed by Arup, the Geode consists of four triangular structures – one for performers and three for audience members – that both protect from the elements and create the enveloping sonic environment of an indoor hall in the great outdoors.
Guests of this concert will be transported to the Geode via shuttle van or may join as part of their hiking or biking journey.
