Description

Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences. Crucially, Glyndebourne has remained financially independent since 1934.

Program

Music by Gioachino Rossini
Libretto by Jacopo Ferretti
Rossini's version of the Cinderella fairy tale The story of Rossini's effervescent comedic opera is more familiarly known as Cinderella. In Rossini's variation, the wicked stepmother is replaced by a wicked stepfather, Don Magnifico. The Fairy Godmother is replaced by Alidoro, a philosopher and the Prince's tutor. Cinderella is identified not by her glass slipper but by her bracelet.
La Cenerentola, which Rossini completed in three weeks not long after his highly-acclaimed The Barber of Seville, is considered to have some of his finest writing for solo voice and ensembles.
